Visually, Tung Tung Tung Sahur appears as an anthropomorphic wooden log or plank with an expressive, somewhat menacing face and two sturdy legs. He carries a large baseball bat as his primary weapon. The design is deliberately simple yet unsettling, a faceless piece of wood that somehow conveys more personality than most fully rendered characters.

The character’s name references the Indonesian tradition of striking bedug drums to wake Muslims for sahur, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan. In lore, if someone is called for sahur three times and does not respond, Tung Tung Tung Sahur will appear at their home. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán featured a 3D model of the character dancing in an official government TikTok video, cementing Tung Tung Tung Sahur’s crossover from internet meme to genuine cultural phenomenon.
